Shuggie is an 11-year-old female shih tzu who came to us in August from the Animal Care Center of New York City. At initial intake, she was diagnosed with diabetes, corneal edema, keratitis and periocular crusting. As a result of this diagnosis, Shuggie would have to be on medication for the rest of her life. In addition, it was certain that she would eventually lose her eyesight. She also had several mammary tumors that needed to be removed. We knew that, because of Shuggie’s health issues, her finding a forever home would be difficult.
Thanks to the grant from the Petfinder Foundation, Shuggie was able to finally have a loving home. With her adoption fee waived and her medication paid for, she was adopted within one week of our receiving the grant. Her family reports that she is doing well. She was fortunate to be adopted by a person who had prior experience with a diabetic pet and was familiar with giving daily insulin injections.
