Our grant helped San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter in San Marcos, Tex., vaccinate Miller (above) against common shelter diseases while he patiently waited to be adopted. And if you donate to us through Global Giving from Oct. 14-Nov. 12, you’ll help twice as many homeless pets like him.
For those 30 days, Animal Planet’s R.O.A.R. is matching donations to the Petfinder Foundation dollar-for-dollar (learn more about the campaign here). That means twice as many shelter dogs can be protected against disease. Shelter Supervisor Kara Montiel says our grant allowed the organization to vaccinate all incoming dogs against distemper and parvo, not just those who’d been picked to be adopted.
Montiel says the grant helped more than 225 dogs, including Miller, a staff and volunteer favorite:
“Miller, a male Lab Retriever/Golden Retriever mix, was brought in as a stray in February. His stay was long due to several factors. First, he had to be treated for an upper-respiratory infection right after his stray hold ended, then he went up for adoption.
“Miller was on hold for a week for a rescue and awaiting transport out of state, then that fell through. He went back up for adoption and for a long time did not receive any interest from the public. Finally, we had a prospective adopter coming in to potentially adopt him when a visitor was accidentally scratched by him and he had to be quarantined for 10 days.
“Miller came back up for adoption and was getting depressed. Finally, just a couple of weeks ago, he got adopted and went home to a large ranch and other dogs to play with — which he absolutely loves! Miller had a happy ending and the shelter staff were so happy for him — he was everyone’s favorite and was loved dearly. Miller’s vaccination, provided by this grant, probably helped him to recover from his upper-respiratory infection quickly and remain very healthy the rest of his stay.”
