How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant helped us tremendously, particularly with regard to cat adoptions and hard-to-place dogs. Being able to waive the fees helped make our pets more appealing.

We have a lot of difficulty adopting cats out, as there are so many community cats in our area. It's hard to convince people to pay to adopt a cat when they can easily find a free kitten from a friend or a Facebook search.

We were able to not only post that our cats' fees had been waived, but we were able to send them home with all of the supplies they'd need in their new home. This allowed us to adopt more cats in the past month than we've ever done in one month's time before.

Waiving fees helped us so much in finding homes for our homeless pets and we can't thank you enough! This grant has saved lives for our rescue and we're very grateful to Kia and the Petfinder Foundation.

On April 14 of this year, the Petfinder Foundation awarded our organization a grant of $1,000 to help cover the costs of medical care for Spiderman, an 8-month-old pup who came into our care when he was hit by a car and his owners were contacted and chose to surrender him. Spidey had to have a rear leg amputated and went into a medical foster home, where he was thriving with all of his foster siblings and receiving excellent care.

We were starting to feel that Spiderman was being overlooked due to his missing leg, as he’d been with his foster for two months with no applications at all. So we made another Facebook post detailing his story and how he didn’t have any ongoing medical needs and that he needed a good home of his own and that we were waiving his adoption fee. That post had over two hundred shares and we received multiple applications for him.

Spiderman was at a medical foster’s home in Des Moines and, rather than wait for us to arrange transportation, his excited new family drove six hours to pick him up themselves that same day! On June 21, 2023, Spiderman went to his new home with his forever family.

Spiderman has a human mom and dad and two dog brothers ages 2 and 4. He’s settled in wonderfully and loves wrestling with his new siblings. His proud parents keep commenting on what a good boy he is.
