The money from this grant was used to purchase food, vaccines, flea treatment, toys, and treats for shelter animals.
The money from this grant helped us purchase supplies needed for the animals in our care. The grant also helped us use some of the supplies, such as leashes, enrichment toys, and treats, to help animals flourish while in our care.
Such was the case with Calypso, a 5-year-old Siberian husky who came to us with a painful eye condition and required surgery to remove the affected eye. Our staff was able to care for Calypso before and after her surgery while she adjusted to being a one-eyed dog.

When Calypso arrived at the shelter as a stray, we knew something was wrong at first glance. Her right eye was cloudy and enlarged, the tell-tale signs of glaucoma. And that was not all. Calypso was also suffering from mastitis, a painful infection that most commonly affects nursing moms, as well as wounds on her ears from fly bites.
Our veterinary team quickly assessed this girl and came up with an action plan. They started her on antibiotics to treat her painful infection and ointment for her wounded ears, and scheduled her for eye-removal surgery.
Calypso’s eye-removal surgery went off without a hitch. One of our skilled shelter veterinarians removed her incredibly painful right eye. Calypso was also spayed at the same time to ensure she would not have more litters.
Dogs are resilient animals, and by the next day, Calypso was already showing signs of feeling better. She wagged her tail as our veterinarian approached as if to say “thank you for helping me!”
Over the coming days, her eye quickly healed, her infection cleared, and her ears began slowly getting better. Our behavior team is now helping her adapt to life as a one-eyed dog.
Thanks to the Bar Dog Operation Grant, we were able to help Calypso stay comfortable while in our stay as she healed. Calypso is now safe, healthy, and living with her forever family.
