Polk County Humane Society: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Using the Petfinder Foundation Kia Pet Adoption grant, Polk County Humane Society was able to discount adoption fees on 79 pets and get them adopted to loving homes!

The discounts were from 20% to 50% of the normal adoption fees. The discounts were based on how long the pet had been at the Humane Society, the age of the pet, and any special needs.

Butch (first photo) is a large American bulldog. Butch was transferred to Polk County Humane Society (PCHS) from the public pound in Buffalo, MO, during the pandemic in 2021. He was rowdy, lacked training, and was scary for many people.

PCHS had worked with him and he was adopted three times and returned. Using the Petfinder Foundation Kia Pet Adoption grant, Butch’s adoption fee was discounted to $75. He was adopted by a person who drove all the way from Fargo, North Dakota, to get him! That is a 10-hour drive one way! And it is going great. Butch has finally found his happy place!

Tornado (second photo) came to PCHS after being found in the aftermath of a hail and tornado storm. He was a cute kitten and ready to take on the world. He was adopted at 9 weeks old and returned after he was determined to be FIV-positive.

Since it is required to retest to be sure of that diagnosis at 4-5 months old, Tornado stayed at the Humane Society for those months, all alone in a cage, just waiting to find out. When he was retested, he was negative! But by then he was an older kitten competing with the 8-week-old kittens for an adopter.

Tornado finally found his person in September. His adoption fee was discounted using the Petfinder Foundation Kia Pet Adoption grant and he went to his forever home, where they love him dearly.

Shadow (third photo) was surrendered to PCHS by his owner of nine years. Shadow had been banned from his owner’s apartment complex for biting, and he continued his aggressive behavior while waiting for an adopter to come along.

Even though he was a small dog and miniature pinscher mix, his aggressive behavior was a turn-off for most adopters. PCHS thought Shadow might live the rest of his life at the shelter.

Then, PCHS discounted his adoption fee using the Petfinder Foundation Kia Pet Adoption grant and along came the right person to take on Shadow’s big personality. He went to his new home in September and is living happily ever after.
