Oregon Dog Rescue: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The 2023 Kia Pet Adoption Grant has been life-changing for some very lucky pups here at Oregon Dog Rescue! There are two special dogs whom this particular grant has benefitted.

Being a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, adoption fees are a huge source of funding when it comes to running a dog rescue. What people might not understand is the cost associated with providing shelter, medical care, feeding, and enrichment. We are able to operate and sustain this organization only by charging adoption fees and raising donations.

All dogs are deserving of finding homes; some just need a little extra care, longer stays, and more exposure. The Kia Pet Adoption Grant helped to remove a barrier to make adoption possible for two outstanding dogs. We're absolutely elated to share their success stories with the Petfinder Foundation!

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Our most recently adopted is Dillon (first and second photos), a 1- to 2-year-old, chocolate brown, 44-lb. basset hound mix with a larger than life personality.

Dillon arrived to our rescue as a stray from Texas back in June and was in need of extensive dental work. His canines were impacting his quality of life and this boy was in need of help. After THREE expensive and complicated dental procedures, he was finally on the long road to recovery.

Now remember Dillon’s larger-than-life personality? This short, robust boy was loved by all who met him at the rescue; however, when potential adopters would come to visit, they were overwhelmed by his zest and a capella hound-dog singing style.

We just knew that if he was given enough time, exposure, and a nurturing environment, he could really shine and find his perfect match. We were able to reduce his adoption fee to assist the adoption to move forward.

We are happy to report that Dillon found his forever home yesterday after five long months of waiting. He now lives on land with his retired owners, where he can be the center of attention and live out his hound-dog dream life!

Then there is Dewey (photos 3-5). Dewey has an infectious smile and the handsome looks of a husky. He is estimated to be 1-2 years old and came to us as a stray from a local county shelter.

This sweet, fluffy boy found himself facing some major shelter-dog hurdles. He was a staff favorite, but his exuberance and puppy-like tendencies, grouped with the fact that huskies are saturating every local rescue around, were making it extremely difficult to find him a proper home.

He was a resident at Oregon Dog Rescue for more than six months. He was even featured on 106.7 The Eagle to reach a potential adopter.

It worked! Sometimes the perfect adopters really are out there and, by removing the barrier of an adoption fee, dogs like Dewey are able to find their forever homes.

Because of Kia’s Pet Adoption Grant, Dewey is now in a wonderful, breed-savvy home, receiving the love, training, and care that he has always deserved.

Thank you for helping the rescue dogs by making adoptions accessible through this grant for dogs like Dillon and Dewey!
