Kitty Cat Prevent a Litter Society: Cat Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We recently moved into a new, larger building to accommodate the rising number of cats we are being asked to help. The new building has more rooms, so the equipment and enrichment items we had in our old building were not enough to equip our new space.

One of the great features of the new building is we could have a separate socialization room for kittens, allowing us to have programs such as our read-to-a-kitten program, where children come in and sit and read a book to a kitten and then play with them.

The grant went to buying books and toys for this program, as well as a climbing apparatus for the kittens to allow them to get some exercise and entertain themselves when no one is in the room with them.

A typical kitten we would help would be Mango 2. Mango 2 was born to a feral mother on a rural property, and was trapped along with her mother and six littermates about a week after she was born.

The mother was deemed to be not socializable and was spayed and returned to the property after the kittens were weaned. The kittens were then placed in the socialization room, where they were played with and read to by a number of volunteers and children until someone fell in love with Mango 2 and took her home.

She is now named Lily and will be spayed and will live safely as an indoor cat with her loving family for the rest of her life.
