La Plata County Humane Society: Cat Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
We were able to purchase several new enrichment items for each the four rooms we have dedicated to cat care. The cats in our care have been enjoying the new enrichment items that engage their senses of sight, smell, sound, and touch.
Examples of items purchased include: Interactive laser light toys, rotating star projectors for each room, hanging toys for 20 of our cat kennels, an artificial aquarium, dried fish, an essential oil diffuser and oils, and lavender scented pillows. All of these items help keep prevent boredom and decrease stress.
Specifically, it has been great to add more enrichment options in our cat isolation area. We currently have two kitties with ringworm and one with a chronic upper-respiratory infection who are being treated in this room. These treatments can take six weeks or more, so a variety of enrichment items are essential to helping these kitties maintain their mental health.

A litter of five kittens was found fending for themselves by one of our foster families. After being brought to La Plata County Humane Society, these kitties were named after greek Gods: Ares, Apollo, Poseidon, Aphrodite, and Zeus.
Our new cat enrichment items came just in time to help entertain these sweet babies while they awaited their new families. You can see these kittens playing with interactive toys in some of the above photos.
Three of these kitties have already been adopted. Ares and Apollo are still awaiting their forever families. Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation, these kittens will have plenty of enrichment during their stay at La Plata County Humane Society.
