Playa Animal Welfare Services, Inc.: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We used the $3,250 awarded to us by the Petfinder Foundation Disaster Relief Grant for many purposes.

We used about $500 to replace vaccines that were destroyed when we lost power and were not able to keep them refrigerated during the two weeks we were without power following Hurricane Fiona.

We spent about $600 replacing dry cat and kitten food and more than $200 replacing cat litter that was destroyed by the flooding caused by the hurricane. We bought three new cages to replace those that were destroyed by the hurricane.

The rest of the funds went towards the $15,000 we spent building a new fence to replace the one that was damaged beyond repair by the hurricane. The fence construction started last week and is currently about halfway done.

This grant helped us to get our shelter back on its feet so we can continue to provide quality food, shelter, and enrichment to the animals in our care. We are very grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for this assistance!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Charlotte is a beautiful Siamese kitty who was left homeless by Hurricane Fiona. A senior citizen in our town lost her home to severe flooding and begged us to take her cat because she could not take Charlotte with her when she had to leave her home to stay with relatives.

With the help of this grant, we were able to take in kitty Charlotte, provide her with food, shelter, litter, and vaccines; get her vetted; and find her a loving home in Baltimore.

We took in several kitties like Charlotte who lost their homes due to the hurricane. We also took in several litters of kittens that were found abandoned as a result of the storm and several mother cats with nursing kittens who had nowhere else to go.
