Gateway Pet Guardians: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant was extremely helpful to us during the timeframe that St. Clair County Animal Control (SCCAC) was closed after their building was completed flooded on July 26, 2022. They were completely closed and not able to operate in any capacity, so Gateway Pet Guardians stepped in and fielded all calls and requests for stray and owner-surrendered pets.
In two weeks, we took in 90 pets, which is double our usual intake. There were many pet owners who had to relinquish their pets due to losing their housing and we were there to help, thanks in part to funding from the Petfinder Foundation! This grant helped us provide basic care -- vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, supplies, etc. -- to all of the new-intake pets.
How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
One dog who was helped thanks to this grant was Beefalo.
Beefalo was at SCCAC when the flooding happened. We were able to rescue him from the flood and bring him into our care.
One of the volunteers who helped on the day of the flood fell in love with him and his adorable face and personality. Once he was cleared by our vet and able to get neutered, he was adopted by the volunteer and now has two doggy siblings to play with every day.
