How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

With the funds awarded through the Kia Pet Adoption grant, we were able to reduce adoptions fees and, in a small handful of cases, completely waive them to help our rescue facilitate adoption during the summer months, which are our busiest time of the year.

Neptune (first photo) and Normandy (second photo) came to our rescue this summer after we received a call for help from a woman living in a trailer overrun with cats that she had taken in from the area after they had been dumped at the trailer park.

We quickly got both cats into the clinic for vetting and, sadly, Normandy tested positive for felv (feline leukemia). We spayed both cats and vaccinated Neptune to protect her from the disease.

We knew that these two girls would be difficult to place, since they were already a little older and now one had tested positive for felv. We made the decision to adopt them out together, since Neptune had already been exposed and was now vaccinated to protect her; this would ensure both girls had a lifelong friend.

With the help of the Kia Adoption Grant, we were able to completely waive the adoption fees for both girls and find them the purrfect forever home together. Without the help of this grant, we would have been faced with prolonging their time with the rescue or eating the cost of their vetting by waiving the adoption fee.

We were also able to place an older kitty named Sandy (third photo) by waiving her adoption fee completely. After Sandy was surrendered to our rescue, we quickly found that she did not enjoy the company of other cats, which made life in her foster home difficult. Placing a cat who needs to remain the only pet in a household can be difficult, but by waiving her adoption fee we were able to open up the door that led to the best possible outcome for her: a new family to love her!

Lastly, we were able to reduce adoption fees for nine kittens who were adopted in pairs. During the busy kitten season, there is never a shortage of kittens up for adoption. Reducing the adoption fee on one kitten when he or she is adopted in a pair with a sibling gives our rescue the opportunity to place our kittens in homes much quicker and ensure that they each have a lifelong playmate and friend in their new home. It’s a win-win!
