Canine Rescue of Central PA: P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Canine Rescue of Central PA received the 2023 P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant. This award included pet beds of varying sizes from small to large to accommodate adoptable dogs at our rescue.

Our rescue has varying sizes and ages of dogs waiting for their forever homes. Our older dogs do suffer from arthritis. We also have dogs who need beds to feel more secure and at home to help relieve some of the anxiety associated with kennel life.

Once we'd received the pet beds via mail service, they were distributed to dogs who would not destroy them. The dogs who received them were Peyton, Caroline, Oreo, Lydia, Coltrane, Sinatra, Milo, Bear, Ladybug, and Rio. All are still waiting for their forever homes. Ladybug suffered from severe anxiety and has been placed in a foster home. The other dogs listed are still living at the kennel and have active profiles on Petfinder.

How many pets did this grant help?

At this time, 10. As dogs find their forever homes, the beds will be cleaned and made available to other dogs at the kennel.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Rio (first and second photos) came to the rescue with his brother Bear in April. They were both surrendered by their family. Rio was super sad and anxious. He was provided a bed in addition to a blanket from his former home. Having the combination seemed to help him settle a bit.

Rio and his brother are still at the rescue. Rio’s personality has really come through. He is a fun dog who always makes the volunteers laugh. He seems to always have a smile on his face. We are thankful for the grant award and that we were able to make a stressed and anxious pet feel more at ease by making his kennel a bit cozier. You can meet Rio here.

Peyton (third photo) is a senior dog at the rescue. He is a collie/shepherd mix. At 10 years of age, he does have arthritis, but don’t let that full you: He still has some pep in his step.

Overall, Peyton cannot wait to find a calm home where he can have his own space to chill and relax. We are thankful that we were able to provide Peyton with a comfortable bed that was much more supportive for his joints than your typical blanket or makeshift beds that we have. You can meet Peyton here.
