Kokomo Humane Society: Play Yard Renovation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Part of our mission at the Kokomo Humane Society is to improve the lives of animals, which includes making their time at the shelter as positive and comfortable as possible. We have wonderful yards for playgroup, but the largest yard we have for dog walking was just grass and it was difficult for the staff and volunteers to walk the dogs that weren't able to join in playgroups.

Many volunteers have commented on how much nicer it is to walk the dogs with the paths. They are also able to walk them more when it has been rainy and the yard is wet or muddy. The dogs get more time outside and the experience is more enjoyable for both the dogs and the people walking them.

How many pets did this grant help?

I would estimate that at least 500 dogs will be walked multiple times per year.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Poor Leo (first and second photos) has had almost as many homes as he has years of life. He has been adopted and returned three times through fault of his own.

The first adopter thought he was too active for their family, the second did not have adequate yard or fencing at their home, and the third owner had personal issues that made the home an unhealthy fit for Leo.

Leo has been taken through obedience training. Leo walks well on a leash, which makes him a perfect fit for our walking path. But we would rather see him in a forever home walking on all the community routes with his best friend. Leo is a really sweet guy who deserves a family of his own.

You can meet Leo here.
