How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant was used to provide heartworm treatment for four dogs who were either picked up by, dropped off at, or abandoned at our shelter. These dogs were immediately tested, and unfortunately all four tested positive for heartworms.

Because of Covid-19, our shelter had to cancel its major spring fundraising event, and also volunteers and visitors had limited, and at times no, access to our shelter. The funding for the four dogs who needed heartworm treatment was tremendously helpful at this time since our adoption numbers were reduced, yet the medical needs and number of cats and dogs increased. This grant allowed us to provide heartworm treatment without using funds that were earmarked for routine pet maintenance and medical care.

One of the pets who received heartworm treatment is Duke (first photo). He was found wandering the streets of Galveston and brought to our shelter. He is approximately 10 months old and is a mixed-breed, partial Chihuahua. He has not been adopted but is now heartworm-negative.

Another dog who was added to our shelter is Aiko (second photo), a pure husky. He is approximately 4 years old and was brought to our shelter from Pearland Animal Control. He also tested positive for heartworms and is now negative, but has not been adopted.

A third pet who received heartworm treatment was Tulip (third photo), a Chihuahua mix. Tulip is 3 years old and was adopted on Aug. 15, 2020 (fourth photo).

The final pet who received heartworm treatment was Starla (fifth photo), a Labrador retriever mix. She is now awaiting adoption. Starla is 3 years old. Meet Starla here.
