Catering to Cats and Dogs: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Kia Pet Adoption Grant has been such a blessing to our rescue. Adoption fees don't even begin to cover the expenses associated with our medical cases or the harder-to-adopt animals we tend to house a little longer than the others due to behavioral or medical issues, but this grant has allowed us to help the adopter focus on the tools and supplies they may need to set each animal up for success rather than an adoption fee, supplies, deposits, etc., and relieves a little bit of the financial burden while ensuring the rescue can continue to save the ones truly in need.

After a total of three years and eight months in rescue, Owen (first photo) was adopted. He had been adopted and returned quite a few times, but never really given the chance he deserved.

He went through professional training and needed a family that would commit to setting him up for success. Owen was dog-reactive, but ONLY if the decompression period was ignored. He was a wild man in public, but only if you allowed it.

He now lives successfully in a family with two other dogs whom he plays with regularly and who have allowed him to move forward at his own pace. This grant allowed the family to focus on Owen’s training needs and setting him up for forever success.

Roxanne (second photo) was another harder-to-adopt dog we had. She was the cutest little pittie mix, but her previous adopters of more than three years failed her over and over again.

Roxanne was dog-friendly, but only in small numbers and with dogs she was familiar with. When she got in a fight at daycare, and then a fight at home, and a fight on a playdate with a new dog, they surrendered her back to us.

She was with us for more than 10 months with little to no interest, until a family with no other dogs came along and swooped this girl up. She is now living the dream as queen of her castle.
