How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Petfinder Foundation Bar Dog grant covered intake vaccines for 35 dogs and three months of heartworm preventatives. This helped us with the increased numbers of dogs and cats rescued as a result of the pandemic.

This grant helped us with the increased expenses in rescuing dogs from rural shelters closed to the public due to the pandemic. Very little vetting is done at those shelters. This grant helped us rescue 30 dogs from shelters such as St. Landry, LaFourche, and Terrebonne Parish where dogs would have very low chances of adoption. The vaccines and heartworm preventatives helped 30 dogs on the first step to adoption.

Kitty is a sweet young Chihuahua mix who was rescued from St. John the Baptist Parish Animal Shelter, which had closed to the public due to the pandemic. Thanks to the Bar Dog grant, Kitty was rescued and had a total intake workup, including all her vaccines and heartworm preventatives.

With Hurricane Ida heading our way, there was a plea for fosters to bring down the numbers in the shelter. Kitty was picked up by one of our regular fosters.

With no power and four generators running at the shelter, there were no adoptions in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. During this time, Kitty’s foster fell in love with her. Kitty is a perfect fit for her foster’s resident dogs. It became the very best failure: a foster failure! That is how Kitty got such a great home.
