LMN FELINE Rescue: Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The grant funds were used for well-cat expenses for rescued cats and kittens in our foster care, which averages around $125 per cat. Spay/neuter at a low-cost “rescue-friendly” clinic is around $70 per cat. LMN Feline Rescue also combo tests each animal taken into our care, for both feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), to ensure that our adopters are bringing healthy cats into their homes. This cost is about $18 per cat. In addition, we provide a basic rescue exam ($10 or more), a rabies vaccination ($10), and a microchip ($15).
We have experienced what seems to be a longer than normal “kitten season” this fall, and are still bringing young kittens into our program. Many of these young ones are in fragile condition from the cold and wet weather, and also the fact that in some cases they may be the mother cat’s third litter of the year. The grant has provided us with the needed resources to provide extra medical care (such as medication for respiratory ailments and infections), and also to accept more of these kittens into our foster care, and then on to their forever homes.

One of our fosters was driving with her son when he spotted an old tractor alongside the road with what looked like a kitten on top of it. When she pulled her car over to check, they discovered a litter of six young kittens on and around the tractor. They were all cold and wet, very dirty and full of fleas. They were also very hungry! We found a kind-hearted foster who was willing to care for all six, and after being combo tested, treated for fleas, and receiving their first round of vaccinations, the kittens are now healthy and happy. Four have already moved into their forever homes, while the remaining two have contracts pending. A very happy success story.
