York Adopt-A-Pet: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We have several senior and hard-to-adopt pets in our shelter. We are a no-kill shelter, so these dogs and cats will remain with us until a home is found for them, even though senior pets and pets with anxiety problems are harder to adopt.

This grant allowed us to adopt these pets with no adoption fee, which enabled families that could not afford the care of a pet and the adoption fee the ability to adopt a pet that needed a home.

Blake is a blue heeler cross who was found as a stray and not claimed. Blake had too much energy for his own good and was not fond of other dogs.

He came to us in October 2021 and was loved by the volunteers but, because of his energy, was overlooked for seven months. He was adopted but returned two days later because the people who adopted him were not able to control him.

We were very sad because, although he was well-liked by the volunteers, we feared he would spend the rest of his life at the shelter.

And then one of our volunteers brought their brother and his family to the shelter and they fell in love with Blake. They were told all of his bad habits and continued to come visit him.

A family decision was made to give Blake a home so, with prayers and high hopes, he went to his new home.

Because of the KIA grant, we adopted Blake with no adoption fee. We were delighted with all of the messages we received. Blake had found the home he was had been waiting for and has become a loved family member.
