The Kauai Humane Society: Dog Field Trip/Short-Term Fostering Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Thanks to this generous grant from the Petfinder Foundation, we were able to purchase much-needed harnesses for our field-trip dogs to wear on their adventures. They say "adopt me" and, paired with the field-trip backpacks (awarded two years ago!), really showcase our adoptable dogs while keeping them safely with their humans. We have approximately 12 dogs go out each day and the wear and tear on the harnesses can be quite extreme due to the weather and ocean conditions on the island, and thanks to this grant we now have enough to rotate and replace for at least another year!

How many pets did this grant help?

350

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Lambeau (first photo) and his sister Wrigley came to us as owner-surrenders when their owner had to move off the island. They quickly won the hearts of all of the staff at the shelter.

Lambeau and Wrigley had been field-trip favorites for almost the entire 39 days they were in our care. Whenever Lambeau saw the harness, he would get so excited because he seemed to know that he was going to go on an adventure with a new friend.

On all his field trips (second and third photos), humans raved about Lambeau’s good manners, and having the harness allowed them to engage with lots of other people who might be interested in adopting.

Just recently, a local couple got to meet Lambeau at the beach while he was wearing his vest on a field trip and thought he might be the one for them. They came to the shelter, met with Lambeau and his sister Wrigley, and fell in love (fourth photo). Both dogs got to go home to their new three-acre farm, where they got to meet their two doggie siblings. Now everyone is living their best lives thanks to a sweet introduction on a field trip (fifth photo).
