Souris Valley Animal Shelter: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Kia Pet Adoption Grant allowed our organization to lower our adoption prices, which helped us place more animals into loving families that may have not been able to adopt otherwise due to affordability.
On top of that, through our transport partners, we were able to successfully help 10 heartworm-positive dogs who came into our care from the South. We were successfully able to clear all of them via medications and injections. Unfortunately, we had one pass away with her adopted family due to congestive heart failure. They were grateful for the care and time we had spent helping their sweet girl with this disease.
How many pets did this grant help?
During the 2022 calendar year, we were able to adopt out 303 cats and kittens and 500 dogs, for a total of 803 animals.

Meet Peri! She came to us from Louisiana and was the sweetest, but very timid, girl.
The foster we lined up for her agreed to take her with the possibility of adopting her if she was a good fit for his home. Unbeknownst to him, her heartworm treatment went on longer than we had hoped. Our staff veterinarian had to adjust her treatment regimen three times before she came back negative.
Her foster was wonderful and was very patient with this timid girl but went into every check up with questions and concerns, and comforted Peri every step of the way. They were a wonderful pair, and boy, did Peri love her foster dad.
Peri’s last heartworm test date was a very emotional one, not only for shelter staff, but for her foster dad as well. There were lots of tears of happiness and joy. For the staff, it was bittersweet: While we all knew Peri was going to stay in the best home ever, we also knew we would miss seeing her.
Her foster parent-turned-adopter, Tom, is the most amazing and caring person that we have met. He still sends us updates on Peri, and the two have the most amazing bond. Peri’s is one of our best success stories by far, and we would not have been able to make stories like this possible without grants like the Kia Pet Adoption Grant!
