Arizona Humane Society: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) is excited and proud to share that this grant underwrote the adoption fees of 104 dogs during a four-day adoption event in March 2022. In the grant application, AHS expected the grant funds to underwrite 73 adoptions, but we were actually able to waive the adoption fee of 31 more pets than expected.

On February 18, Koi, a 9-month-old Labrador retriever mix, was rescued by AHS’ Emergency Animal Medical Technicians™ after his owner surrendered him due to hoarding-like conditions.
As a result of the inhumane conditions in which he had been kept and having had little contact with humans, he was extremely shy and completely shut down when he arrived in the shelter (first photo). He could barely be touched without urinating in fear, but AHS’s highly trained behavior team was prepared to help.
Koi spent almost every day with AHS’s behavior team (second photo). Finally, after spending hours with the team and having multiple dog playdates, he began to warm up to people! Once he learned that people could be trusted, he became incredibly social and friendly, but he definitely needed a stable home with a loving and patient family.
After a month in the shelter, AHS’s behavior team determined that Koi was finally ready for adoption (last photo), just in time for AHS’s four-day St. Patrick’s Day Adoption Special. Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation, Koi’s adoption fee was waived, and we are proud to share that he found his forever home on day two of the four-day event.
A couple of days after his adoption, AHS’s behavior team reached out to his new family to see how Koi, now named Tanner, was doing. His family shared: “Tanner is doing awesome!! He is slowly getting used to his new surroundings and sisters — Tinker, Tilly, and Trixie. He is so mellow and loving! Thank you so much for this beautiful puppy.”
Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation, Tanner is now living his best life with his forever family!
