Highland Lakes Canine Rescue: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant allowed us to reduce adoption fees for 12 dogs in our care, directly leading to the adoption of 12 dogs who otherwise may have been passed over. Senior dogs and those with medical issues take much longer to find their forever homes and get adopted than puppies and "perfect" dogs. We know that reducing adoption fees can remove one of these hurdles to adoption, and we were able to reduce the adoption fees by $100 for each dog helped by this program. Thank you!

Squishy, a 10-month-old pocket pit bull, is an excellent example of a rescue dog with special medical needs who greatly benefited from Kia’s sponsorship!
Squishy came to us with the most severe case of demodex mange we have ever witnessed, and our facility rehabilitates dogs with mange on a regular basis. She had lost all the hair on her body, making it impossible to determine her breed.
After several months of intensive treatment, Squishy emerged the victor and was cured of her demodex and secondary infections. All that was left was for the rest of her beautiful white coat to fill in!
A young family saw her photo on the website and knew that she needed to be a part of their lives. Squishy’s sponsored adoption fee allowed them to purchase medicated shampoo and enough allergy medication to get her through the final months of growing her hair back and healing her skin.
In her family’s latest update, Squishy was far more white than pink! We are overjoyed that Squishy persevered and has at last found her forever home.
