DeKalb Humane Society: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The KIA Pet Adoption grant enabled us to provide reduced adoption fees for three months at the DeKalb Humane Society shelter. By advertising the partnership with the Petfinder Foundation and KIA on our Facebook page, we generated more interest in adoption through July, August, and September. This resulted in 10 reduced-fee adoptions of our dogs in care.

The reduced fee helped get some of our harder-to-place dogs adopted. We found homes for Swiss, Milo, Mississippi, Mudslide, Lady, Rocky, Jane, Bluey, Willow, and Zuri. Some of these dogs had been surrendered, and some came from abuse and neglect circumstances. We were very grateful for the partnership with KIA and the Petfinder Foundation and the flexibility it offered us to meet the needs of our dogs and community members. Thank you!

Rocky (first photo) was brought in by his family, who were heartbroken and homeless. This family had fallen on hard times and we told them we would care for Rocky while they tried to find a place to stay. They were very appreciative and said they would visit as often as possible.

Many people who drop off animals say they will visit and never do, but this family did. They did not want to lose Rocky and visited often, sometimes even borrowing gas money to see him. However, it became apparent that they would not be able to find a home for themselves that would accept Rocky, so they put him up for adoption.

When Rocky was adopted (second photo), the new owner heard his story, reached out to Rocky’s original family, and told them they could visit. Now Rocky enjoys two families in the safety of his new home. The old family comes for coffee and a visit. This is a heartwarming story of how our community works and how KIA and the Petfinder Foundation played a role in our community’s fabric.
