Barren River Animal Welfare Association: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Kia Pet Adoption Grant allowed Barren River Animal Welfare Association (BRAWA) to reduce adoption fees for 75 dogs and cats, targeting "hard-to-place" animals. Studies show that reduced adoption fees help quickly find homes for more animals; find homes faster for hard-to-place pets like senior pets, pets with special needs, etc.; and attract new adopters and allow previous adopters to adopt additional pets at a lower cost.

Vulnerable animals who are harder to home, such senior cats/dogs, those with medical needs and/or behavioral issues, dogs/cats who aren’t thriving in the shelter environment, and certain breeds that make up a large percentage of the shelter population are among those classified as "hard-to-place." Additionally, cats and dogs that suffer from a “black pet” stigma, shy pets, and those who must be the only pet in a home aren’t easy to find forever homes for either.

The Kia Pet Adoption Grant supported reduced adoption fees at the Barren River Animal Welfare Association (BRAWA), benefiting many dogs and cats — such as Freya (first photo).

Freya, a 50-lb. female pit bull terrier, was brought to the shelter by a caring citizen who found her running loose in his neighborhood. She was generally healthy but had obviously had a rough life and appeared to have been on her own for a while.

Because she was a hard-to-place breed, the staff worked hard to showcase her to the public and provide the love, medical care, and attention she needed as she waited for a new home. Unfortunately, she was passed by for more than three weeks before luck changed for Freya.

A wonderful family adopted Freya as a companion for their elderly dog — a dog they also adopted from BRAWA over 13 years ago as a 4-month-old puppy. It was a great outcome for everyone, especially Freya, who found a loving family that supports pet adoption and is able to provide companionship to an elderly dog.

Freya’s picture is included among several showcasing animals who benefitted from the Kia Pet Adoption Grant.
